Petersburg has nurtured Pushkin and Dostoevsky, Nureyev and Baryshnikov, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky. It has also seen its share of tragedy, including the infamous 900-day Nazi siege during which Leningrad, as it was then called. Today, as it struggles to regain its traditional majesty and influence, Petersburg remains both a thriving center of the arts and a splendidly preserved architectural gem. Among the city's glories are the Hermitage and the Russian Museum.
